City school attendance zones need adjustment
Every now and then, the number of children attending Auburn's five elementary schools gets a little out of whack. An imbalance is starting to develop at Genesee and Herman Avenue schools and officials are wrestling with how to shift children around to compensate - with changes expected by the fall of 2008. Seven years ago, Genesee had 366 children and Herman Avenue had 454. This year, Genesee has 428 children and Herman Avenue's population has grown to 478. The number of children attending the district's three other elementary schools have all declined over that same period of time. Casey Park has gone from 507 to 402, Owasco has dropped from 478 to 382 and Seward has declined from 497 to 384. "Each school has its own boundaries, with children living in those neighborhoods assigned to that school until the proper number is reached," said John B.
Indiana releases first report on hospital errors
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana hospitals and surgery centers reported 77 serious medical errors in 2006, according to a preliminary report released Tuesday by the state Department of Health. The report shows 23 cases of severe bed sores, 21 cases of leaving a foreign object in a surgery patient and six deaths or serious disabilities from medication errors. Nine surgeries were performed on the wrong body part, and two were performed on the wrong patient. The mistakes are rare considering the overall number of medical procedures, officials said. Indiana hospitals and surgery centers logged more than 1.7 million surgical procedures in 2005, and there were 3.7 million patients discharged from hospitals. .
Gay neighborhoods may be victims of their own success
SAN FRANCISCO - Even on a weekday in winter, the Castro district vibrates with energy, most of it male. Men holding hands, walking dogs and lounging at cafes have long been the main attraction in a neighborhood known as a gay mecca the world over. Yet where visitors see a living monument to gay pride, longtime community leader Brian Basinger sees a cultural enclave at risk of becoming a faded museum piece - or worse, a place where men who love men may one day feel like they don't belong. "When I see a stroller now, I see it as someone who evicted a person with AIDS, right or wrong," said Basinger, president of the Harvey Milk Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transexual Democratic Club. For more than 30 years, most big cities have had a district either explicitly or implicitly understood to be the place to go if you were gay - the West Village and Chelsea in New York City, Washington's Dupont Circle, Boston's South End.
Police Find Bodies Of Two Infants Under House
(March 7, 2007)--Police say they found the bodies of two young children no older than toddlers were found wrapped in plastic bags under a house in southwestern San Antonio. Residents of a triplex were searching under the house after smelling a foul odor late Tuesday night. Police Sgt. Gabe Trevino says they called police after finding a plastic bag containing the decomposing body of a small child. When police arrived, they found a second child wrapped in plastic. The medical examiner will determine the children's ages, gender and cause of death. But Trevino says investigators believe the children were between the ages of six months and two years. He says two children about that age lived in the complex until several weeks ago, but the adults there have since moved out.
